ECG

An ECG (ElectroCardioGram) is a heart film, a graphical display of the electrical activity in the heart muscle. Heart films are made for people with symptoms in the chest area. An ECG device, the device used to make the heart film, is used by doctors in hospitals and in GP practices. An ECG device measures the electrical impulses in the heart. First, ten electrodes are attached to the patient's chest, after which the electrodes transmit the electrical impulses to the measuring device. This is subsequently displayed on a screen. In this way, the doctor can detect cardiac arrhythmia, previous heart attacks, oxygen shortages in the heart muscle and a thickening of the heart muscle.
